History of Bourges Cathedral

In 1195, Henri de Sully, Archbishop of Bourges, Eudes de sully's brother,Bishop of Paris, makes a donation to the Cathedral of Bourges chapter. This text is considered like the starting point of the begining of construction of un new edifice destinated to replace the roman Cathedral. This last one was dating from part of the XIth century, and part of the XIIth century. We know not much of this cathedral. It went ahead of several churches place and that we don't know much about now our days. It's been thinking to enlarge it at the first place and to embellish it in secondary. But it seems that the choice of a new entirely construction was decided due to the poor state of this last one. At this time, Bourges was located in the royal south Domain's limit. fiew yards away from the city, was begining l'Aquitaine, English possession. But the Archbishop of Bourges had the title of Primat d'Aquitaine. His authority, frequently contested, was known to Bordeaux. The construction of this first gothic edifice was built at the south of la Loire, comparate to the Royal Cathedral which was Notre-Dame de Paris, was of a great importance as much for the prestige of the King of France, as much for the Archbishop's one. The choice of the construction of a great breadth were taken, comparable to Notre-Dame of Paris and innovating. To make it possible, it has been decided to build it outside the old Gallo-Roman fortifications wall. The difference of the floor necessitated the construction of basements that anticipate exactely the chevet's plan. It's the lower church that we call the Crypt. From 1195 to 1214 construction of what looks like the actually church choir. After an interruption of ten years, the second campaign of construction began in 1225 and will follow to 1230. At this date, the big oeuvre is achieved. Then the frontage works are slowing down. In 1313 the tower of the south should be proped up, in wich one appears fissures by a huge stumbling pillar. This tour never had Bells and is now called the muted tour. Other works of reinforcement of the frontage were undertaken but the tour of North kept unachieved while the consecration of the Cathedral started in May 1324. At the end of the XIVth century, the frontage is modified because of the construction huge "fenestrage" : le "grand Housteau". It's during this age that a false "transept" and an arrow that stayed alive until the 18th century. When they decided to achieve the tour of the north at the end of the XVth century, this last one broke into pieces. It's been replaced by the actual tour : "the tower of butter", so called because it's been construct and paid in part by some fidels who were thanked by not being bind to not eat during the Fasting. During the religious wars in 1562, Bourges was submerged by protestants who destroyed a big part of the Cathedral ornaments and scuptures. On the XIXth century some handrails have been added on the roof as well as pinnacles on the buttress and laterals porches. the Cathedral has been registered in December 1992 on the world patrimony list of the Unesco.
